How to transfer video to an Apple Macintosh computer using Standard 8mm and Hi8 ?
Before anything else, your computer must have compatible video capture software installed, such as like iMovie, and make sure that the computer must have an
Apple FireWire serial bus (IEEE 1394) connection.
You must use an analog-to-digital converter to connect the camera to the Firewire serial bus connection on the computer. For more information regarding iMovie software and the use of an analog-to-digital converter, it is available on the Apple Macintosh Web site at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61745.
Here is the connection procedure.
Connect an Audio/Video (A/V) cable to the A/V output jack of the camcorder.
Connect the other end of the A/V cable to the A/V input jack on the analog-to-digital converter.
Connect a FireWire cable to the output on the analog-to-digital converter.
Connect the other end of the FireWire cable to the FireWire serial bus connection on the computer.
Turn on the camcorder to the VCR, VTR or PLAYBACK mode.
Turn on the analog-to-digital converter.
If the converter has more than one A/V input, make sure the input to which the camcorder is connected is selected on the converter. In addition, make sure the converter is set to convert an analog signal to DV.
Cue the video in the camcorder to the beginning of the video footage to be transferred.
Turn on the computer.
Start the video capture software.
Begin playing the video in the camcorder.
Begin importing the video with the video capture software.
For further information and troubleshooting for importing video with iMovie software is available on the Apple Macintosh Web site at http://www.apple.com/support/imovie/import/.Please do remember that USB Streaming is not supported on Apple Macintosh computers. For system of the CPU it requires PowerPC G4 800MHz or more and last but not the least Intel Core Processor is not supported.

8mm, and Hard Disk Drive camcorders are for Audio Video (A/V) connection.
In able for you to transfer the videos in a computer or vcr, the camcorder must be in the playback mode and the time and date must be displayed on the camcorder LCD screen or viewfinder. In computer connection, date and time information cannot be transferred using a USB cable. Using Your Camcorder as a Webcam Part II ( Using a FireWire Connection)
Unfortunately, most webcams and webcam programs need VFW to work, and FireWire uses WDM, not VFW. Windows has in its programming a facility to translate a VFW program to output WDM, but not vice versa, so when you start your webcam program, it will not recognize your miniDV camcorder, connected by FireWire.
So how can you make it work? Get an analog video capture card, examples are Matrox eTV G450, or an ATI Radeon with video capture, or Hauppage WinTV. All these cards are using VFW device to capture video and should be recognized in webcam software. Always remember that this analog video capture cards are not allowed to be advised to the customer however just remind them to look for an Analog Video Capture Card so that they can use FireWire Connection.
